Five ordinary contingencies
Delayed start: Check revised wave/access rules. Seek
suitable shelter and reconsider food, fluids and preparation timing. Do
not automatically repeat a full warm-up.
Unexpected warmth: Follow event/medical instructions.
Reassess effort and time goal; use appropriate shade/cooling. Stopping
or not starting may be appropriate. Extra drinking does not make target
pace suitable.
Missed station: Check the next opportunity against your
needs and plan. Slow or seek assistance if needed. Avoid sudden
cross-course moves, catch-up sprints or forcing extra fluid later.
GPS disagreement: Compare elapsed time with official
course markers and cumulative checkpoints. Keep units consistent; avoid
chasing instant watch pace.
Slow opening: Consider congestion, terrain and effort.
Revise the remaining goal if needed; do not surge to repay every second.
Symptoms take priority
Stop racing and seek event medical assistance for concerning symptoms.
Confusion, loss of coordination, collapse, seizure or loss of
consciousness in heat require immediate emergency help. Do not wait for
another checkpoint or assume sweating rules out danger.
Heat guidance: nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/ (reviewed May
28, 2026). CDC/NIOSH also lists profuse sweating with heatstroke:
cdc.gov/niosh/heat-stress/about/illnesses.html (March 3, 2026).
